Weaving 50 Years

Over the past 50 years, the Fourth Street Photo Gallery has been the vessel of many different art forms.  There have been exhibits by artists varying from those that are finding their footing, to veteran creatives coming back home to breathe.  Works were curated by Alex Harsley from a wide range of styles and techniques.  From the February 1991 photographic exhibit by Alfred Olusegun Fayemi titled “From Africa and Beyond: A Portrait of the Black Peoples of Africa and the African Diaspora,” to the August 2000 exhibit by Street Installation artist Curtis Cuffie titled “Heaven is under your Feet,” no art form was considered out of bounds.

With every exhibit, the reach of the Fourth Street Photo Gallery expanded into the varying groups of people attracted by each genre, and they kept coming back to experience something new the next time.

Do you remember a past exhibit that struck you, and enchanted you to return for more?  Have you had an exhibit at the Fourth Street Photo Gallery that you would like to reminisce and share your thoughts?  We want to hear from you and compile a memoir exploring the interactions of Alex Harsely and the Fourth Street Photo Gallery over the course of these monumental 50 years of existence in New York City.

50 years of Fourth Street Photo

In 1971, Alex Harsley formed the non-profit Minority Photographers.  The organization often met in his apartment living room, and in conjunction, also issued a regular newsletter.  The newsletter nurtured an ongoing conversation surrounding photographic philosophy, the exchange of ideas, and targeted artists of color to gather, communicate, and learn from each other.

Through this newsletter, the organization focused on opportunities to learn from experiences, such as the weekly outdoor photographic exhibition in Central Park around the 72nd Street Bethesda Fountain, put on by the Central Park Amateur photographers guild.  The need for a more permanent facility to house the growth of knowledge became apparent, as the number of regular participants outgrew his living room.

Opening at 67 East 4th Street in 1973, the Fourth Street Photo Gallery was created as a central gathering space for individuals seeking identity in the expanding world of photographic art.  50 years later, The Fourth Street Photo Gallery still serves the photographic community as a reliable meeting and learning space, and common ground for community locals to stop by and be seen.  Coinciding with the celebration of the gallery’s 50 years of contributions to the Arts, The Apollo’s Victoria Theatre in Harlem will be hosting works by Alex Harsley at their Fall 2023 grand opening.  If you’re interested in sharing your story of connection with the Fourth Street Photo Gallery, or want us to highlight your interaction with Alex Harsley over the past 50 years, please contact the Gallery in the form below.
